Wooden Box with Lenten Sweets
Wooden Box with Lenten Sweets
In an elegant hand-packed wooden box, enriched with reproductions of views of ancient Genoa, here are Romanengo's Quaresimali sweets. An exclusive invention of our company, dating back to the early nineteenth century. The custom of preparing Lenten sweets in Genoa dates back to the 1500s, when the nuns of the convent of San Tommaso mixed simple almond paste sweets without butter, milk or eggs, thus respecting the ban on eating animal fats in the 40 days before the Easter. Since then, every year before Easter it is possible to taste the variety of these sweets: canestrelli scented with distilled orange blossom water, lozenge-shaped mostaccioli with fig and lemon jam, marzipan formed on wafers and filled with dark sugar syrup in various flavours.
