Wooden box with Lenten sweets
Wooden box with Lenten sweets
In an elegant wooden package, enriched with reproductions of the views of ancient Genoa, here are Romanengo's Quaresimali sweets. An exclusive invention of our company, dating back to the early nineteenth century. The custom of preparing Lenten desserts in Genoa dates back to 1500, when the nuns of the convent of San Tommaso kneaded simple almond paste desserts without butter, milk and eggs, thus respecting the ban on eating animal fats in the 40 days before Easter. Since then, every year before Easter it is possible to taste the variety of these sweets: the canestrelli scented with distilled orange blossom water, the lozenge-shaped mostaccioli with fig and lemon jam, the marzipans formed on the wafer and filled with dark sugar syrup in various flavours.
